Odds Formats Explained

Odds show the price of a bet. They help explain the possible return, but they do not tell you what will happen.

Decimal odds

Decimal odds show the total return for each dollar staked. For example, 2.00 means a $1 stake would return $2 total if the bet settles successfully.

Fractional odds

Fractional odds show possible profit compared with the stake. They are common in some older betting markets.

American odds

American odds use plus and minus numbers. Plus numbers show possible profit on $100. Minus numbers show how much stake would be needed for $100 profit.

Odds are not promises

A price can help describe risk and possible return, but it never guarantees the result of a game.

Simple odds graph

  1. 1Lower odds usually mean lower possible return
  2. 2Higher odds usually mean higher possible return
  3. 3Higher possible return often means more uncertainty
  4. 4Odds can change before a bet is placed
